Paul Madwin was 46 years old when he first volunteered at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. Now, at 88, he is planning to do it all over again when the Games return to the city in 2028.
Madwin spent the 1984 Games working at the track and field venue, helping athletes and spectators navigate the chaos of competition. He remembers the energy, the crowds, and the sense of pride in showing off Los Angeles to the world. That experience stayed with him for decades.
When LA was awarded the 2028 Olympics, Madwin did not hesitate. He signed up as a volunteer almost immediately. He says he is not worried about the physical demands. He walks every day and stays active. For him, the chance to be part of something bigger than himself is worth the effort.
The 2028 Games will be the third time Los Angeles hosts the Olympics, following 1932 and 1984. Organizers expect to need tens of thousands of volunteers. Madwin hopes his long history with the city and the Games will inspire others to join him.
He admits that 1984 feels like a lifetime ago. But he says the feeling of being part of the Olympics never really fades. He is already looking forward to putting on the volunteer uniform again, meeting people from around the world, and watching the next generation of athletes compete.
