It feels like a broken record at this point, and I will be the first to admit it. We are talking about the game that was once called 1666: Amsterdam, the project that has haunted the career of Patrice Desilets for over a decade. Every few years, a rumor surfaces, a trademark gets renewed, or a cryptic social media post appears, and the gaming community holds its breath. Then, nothing happens. The silence is deafening, and I am starting to believe that this is the final time I will ever bring it up in a hopeful tone.
The core problem is not the vision. Desilets has always been clear about his desire to create a narrative-driven, third-person adventure set in a historically rich, chaotic Amsterdam. The real issue is the industry's current obsession with scale and speed. As he recently pointed out, the gap between what a single creative mind can imagine and what a production pipeline can actually deliver has become a canyon. He noted that he can ask an AI for seventy-five variations of a single concept in seconds, but he cannot ask seventy-five different human illustrators to do the same. That is the crux of it. The magic of hand-crafted art, the nuance of a human touch, takes time, and time is the one resource that modern publishing giants refuse to give.
So, we are left with a paradox. The technology that could theoretically make such a game easier to produce is also the technology that devalues the very artistry that made Desilets' early work so special. Until a studio is willing to bet on a slower, more deliberate process, this project will remain a ghost. I have stopped checking for updates. I have stopped hoping for a surprise announcement. If it ever comes out, I will be thrilled. But I am not holding my breath any longer. This is the last time I write about it as a possibility. From now on, it is just a memory of a great idea that never got its chance.
