Ron Gilbert, the designer behind the classic Monkey Island series, is taking a different path for his next project. Instead of signing with a major game publisher, he has secured a single wealthy investor to back Thimbleweed Park 2. The move is a departure from the usual crowdfunding or corporate deals seen in the industry.
Gilbert said he wanted full creative control without the pressure of a publisher's timeline or marketing demands. The investor, whose name has not been disclosed, approached him after playing the original Thimbleweed Park. The deal gives Gilbert the budget he needs while letting him keep all rights to the game. He described the arrangement as simple and direct, with no strings attached.
The sequel will continue the story of the odd town and its strange residents. Gilbert confirmed that writing is already underway, and the team is aiming for the same point-and-click style that fans expect. He also noted that the funding covers the full development cycle, so there is no need for early access or episodic releases.
This approach is rare in modern game development, where most mid-sized studios rely on publishers or platforms like Kickstarter. Gilbert admitted the idea came from a friend who knew someone looking to invest in creative projects. He said he feels lucky to have found a partner who trusts his vision and does not want to interfere with the design process.
No release date has been announced yet. Gilbert hinted that the game will be larger than the first one, with more locations and puzzles. He also promised that the humor will stay true to his earlier work, including a few nods to Monkey Island fans. For now, he is enjoying the freedom to make the game he wants, without answering to anyone else.
