The Incident at Galley House Review: Specters of the Past

The latest mystery game from the creators of The Roottrees are Dead arrives with high expectations. The Incident at Galley House aims to blend historical tragedy with intricate deduction, but the result is a curious mix of brilliance and frustration.

Players step into the role of a detective investigating a suspicious death at a crumbling Victorian estate. The atmosphere is thick with dread, and the developers excel at building tension through environmental storytelling. Old photographs, faded letters, and cryptic diary entries all hint at a family curse stretching back generations.

The core puzzle mechanics are where the game shines brightest. You must piece together timelines, cross-reference witness statements, and decode hidden messages. The satisfaction of cracking a particularly tough clue is genuine. However, the game stumbles when it asks you to make leaps in logic that feel unfair. Some solutions rely on obscure historical facts that are never properly introduced, leaving you to either guess or brute-force your way through.

Visually, the hand-drawn art style is gorgeous, capturing the gloom of a rain-soaked English countryside. The sound design is equally strong, with creaking floorboards and distant whispers adding to the unease.

But the narrative falls short. The twist ending, while ambitious, feels rushed. The game sets up complex themes about inherited guilt and memory, then resolves them with a simple explanation that undermines the earlier mystery. For a game so focused on the past, it struggles to make its present-day story feel meaningful.

The Incident at Galley House is a worthy effort from a talented team. It offers clever puzzles and a haunting atmosphere, but its uneven storytelling keeps it from reaching the heights of its predecessor.
