SAN DIEGO -- A packed room at Comic Con got a behind-the-scenes look at how Hollywood creates its most immersive digital worlds during a panel titled "From Short Films to Sinners." The session, held Saturday, brought together a mix of industry veterans and rising talents to break down the process of virtual world-building.
Oscar-nominated VFX supervisor Michael Ralla, known for his work on the upcoming film "Sinners," walked the audience through the technical challenges of crafting believable digital environments. He emphasized that the line between practical effects and CGI continues to blur. "We are not just adding explosions anymore," Ralla said. "We are building entire ecosystems that actors can walk through."
Filmmakers Noam and Sappir Argov, the team behind "Verse" and "Forbidden Fruits," shared their journey from creating short films to tackling larger projects. They stressed that indie filmmakers now have access to tools that were once reserved for major studios. "If you can learn Unreal Engine, you can build a world on your laptop," Noam Argov said.
Actress Nicole Pacent, who has worked on "Criminal Minds" and the "Wolverine 2026" video game, offered a performer's perspective. She noted that acting in virtual spaces requires a different kind of trust. "You have to believe the world is there even when you are standing in front of a green wall," she said.
Neuroscientist Eric rounded out the panel by discussing how the human brain processes virtual environments. He explained that our brains often cannot tell the difference between a real space and a well-crafted digital one. That is why immersion matters so much, he said.
The panel concluded with a clear message: the tools for building virtual worlds are more accessible than ever, but the core skill remains storytelling.
