Texas Launches Probe into Roblox Over Virtual Recreation of Uvalde Tragedy

The state of Texas has opened an investigation into the online gaming platform Roblox following the discovery of a user-created game that simulates the 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. The virtual experience, which reportedly allowed players to reenact the deadly attack that claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers, has drawn sharp condemnation from state officials and advocacy groups.

Attorney General Ken Paxton confirmed the probe on Tuesday, stating that his office is examining whether Roblox violated state laws by hosting content that glorifies violence and exploits a real-world tragedy. The investigation adds to the company's mounting legal troubles in Texas. Just last year, Paxton filed a separate lawsuit against Roblox, accusing the platform of willfully ignoring state and federal online safety regulations by exposing minors to sexually explicit material and failing to implement adequate parental controls.

Critics argue that the Uvalde simulation represents a disturbing trend of user-generated content that trivializes mass violence. Roblox, which is immensely popular among children and teenagers, has faced repeated scrutiny over its content moderation policies. The company has stated that it removes content that violates its community standards, but the Uvalde game remained accessible for an undisclosed period before being taken down.

Paxton’s office emphasized that the investigation will focus on whether Roblox’s platform design and enforcement practices facilitate the creation and distribution of harmful content targeting young users. The outcome could result in additional legal penalties or mandated changes to the company’s moderation systems.
