Sony announced Wednesday that it will stop manufacturing physical discs for all new PlayStation video games starting in 2028. The company cited a steady shift in consumer habits, with more players choosing to buy and download games directly from the PlayStation Store rather than purchasing discs from stores.
The move marks a major turning point for the gaming industry. For decades, owning a game meant having a physical copy you could hold, trade, or lend to a friend. With the all-digital future, that changes. When you buy a digital game, you are not actually buying the software itself. You are buying a license to play it. That license can be revoked, altered, or made unavailable if servers go down or if the publisher decides to pull the title.
Critics argue that this shift erodes consumer rights. Without a disc, you cannot resell a game or pass it on. You also cannot play it if your account is banned or if the storefront shuts down. On the other hand, digital distribution offers convenience. No more scratched discs, no waiting for shipping, and no need to leave the house.
Sony has not yet announced how it will handle backward compatibility or access to older digital libraries. Some gamers worry that classic titles could become trapped behind licensing deals or lost entirely. As the industry moves toward a fully digital model, the debate over what it really means to own a game is only getting louder.
