Kohr Explores: Video games, trading cards galore at SideQuest Expo

Portland's gaming community got a major boost this weekend as SideQuest Expo took over the convention floor, drawing crowds with a mix of vintage video games and modern trading card action. The event, held at the Portland Expo Center, gave attendees a chance to browse rows of classic consoles, rare cartridges, and booster packs from popular card games like Pokemon and Magic: The Gathering.

Organizers said the goal was to create a space where both longtime collectors and newcomers could connect over shared hobbies. Vendors from across the Pacific Northwest set up booths offering everything from refurbished NES systems to graded holographic cards. Some tables featured hands-on demo stations, letting visitors play old favorites on CRT televisions or test their luck with pack openings.

The expo also hosted tournaments throughout the day, with prizes going to winners in both fighting game brackets and card game showdowns. Local artists showed up too, selling custom controller skins and original artwork inspired by classic titles. Families with kids made up a big part of the crowd, and several parents were spotted explaining to younger players what a Game Boy was.

SideQuest Expo has grown steadily since its first year, and this edition felt busier than ever. Organizers hinted at another event later this fall, though no dates have been confirmed yet. For now, attendees left with full bags, tired thumbs, and plenty of stories about the one that got away.
