In a sweeping move to stabilize the once-dominant gaming division, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced on Monday the layoff of 3,200 employees and the divestiture of four internal studios. The decision marks one of the most aggressive restructuring efforts in the company's history, as it struggles to regain footing in a market increasingly dominated by Sony and a shifting subscription landscape.
The cuts represent roughly eight percent of Xbox's global workforce, targeting roles across development, marketing, and support teams. The four studios being sold include a mix of recently acquired teams and long-standing first-party developers, though Sharma did not name the buyers or the specific studios in her initial statement. She framed the move as a necessary step to "focus resources on fewer, higher-impact projects" and to ensure long-term profitability.
This is not the first wave of layoffs for Microsoft's gaming arm. Over the past two years, Xbox has shed thousands of positions following its massive $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Integration challenges, rising development costs, and a slower-than-expected uptake of Game Pass subscriptions have all contributed to the current crisis. Industry analysts note that Xbox has struggled to deliver consistent blockbuster exclusives, a weakness that has eroded its brand cachet among core gamers.
Sharma, who took the helm in late 2023, has been under pressure to reverse these trends. Monday's announcement signals a pivot away from the sprawling studio network built under previous leadership. Instead, the company will concentrate on a handful of tentpole franchises and cloud gaming technology. Whether this leaner approach will be enough to revive Xbox's fortunes remains uncertain, but for the thousands of workers affected, the immediate reality is one of uncertainty and upheaval.
