I won't mourn PlayStation discs

I won't mourn PlayStation discs

Let me be clear: I love physical games. The box art, the manual, the cartridge or disc sliding into the drive with that satisfying click or whir. I will mourn the day I cannot buy a game on a physical medium. But I will not mourn the PlayStation disc. The optical disc, as a format for video games, has long overstayed its welcome. It is slow, fragile, and noisy.

Anyone who has sat through a lengthy install from a Blu-ray, only to have the disc required in the drive for verification, knows the frustration. The disc is no longer the game. It is a glorified license key that spins at high speed, generating heat and hum. The promise of "buying physical" used to mean owning the complete, playable data. Now it means owning a coaster that downloads a day-one patch.

The future of physical media is the cartridge. The Nintendo Switch proved that a solid-state game card can hold a full game, load instantly, and require no install. The PlayStation Portal and the rise of digital-only consoles show that Sony is ready to move on. Good. Let the disc die. Let us have cartridges, or SD cards, or some new solid-state standard that respects the buyer. But if the choice is between a whirring plastic disc and a digital download, I will take the download every time. The disc is a relic. The physical game is not.
