The classic point-and-click adventure series Broken Sword is the latest video game property to get the Hollywood treatment. Production company Story Kitchen has secured the rights to adapt the beloved franchise into a feature film.
Originally released in 1996 by Revolution Software, Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars follows American journalist George Stobbart and French photojournalist Nico Collard as they unravel a conspiracy tied to the Knights Templar. The game won critical acclaim for its hand-drawn art, clever puzzles, and witty writing. It spawned several sequels, with the most recent entry, Broken Sword 5: The Serpent's Curse, arriving in 2013.
Story Kitchen is known for its focus on video game adaptations. The company is also working on projects based on other gaming properties, including the fighting game series Streets of Rage and the survival horror title Alone in the Dark. No director, writer, or cast has been announced for the Broken Sword film yet.
Fans of the series have mixed feelings. Some are excited to see the story reach a wider audience, while others worry that the film might lose the charm and intricate plotting that made the games stand out. The original games were built around slow-paced exploration and dialogue, which can be hard to translate into a two-hour movie.
Revolution Software's founder Charles Cecil has not commented on the adaptation. But given the company's careful stewardship of the franchise over the years, many hope the film will stay true to the source material. For now, the project remains in early development.
