Before the internet became a global utility, a different kind of digital frontier existed. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, young programmers often worked in isolation, trading their latest creations on floppy disks passed between friends. One such teenager, just 15 years old, was building video games from his bedroom. He had no idea his hobby would help shape the infrastructure of the modern web.
The key was the rise of bulletin board systems, or BBS. These were the first true virtual communities, where enthusiasts could dial in using a modem to share messages, files, and software. The teenager's early game experiments, shared on these boards, caught the attention of other coders. They began to build on his work, adding features and fixing bugs. This simple act of sharing and collaboration was a direct precursor to the open-source movement we know today.
That accidental contribution helped demonstrate that a distributed network of hobbyists could produce reliable, innovative software without corporate oversight. The culture of forking projects, submitting patches, and building on shared code was born in those noisy, low-bandwidth BBS connections. Today, that same spirit powers the world's largest development platforms and open-source repositories, all traceable back to a kid in his bedroom who just wanted to make a game.
