I am not going to bury the lead on this one. MMORPGs need to be balanced. In fact, every game needs to be balanced. Balance is a constantly moving target that requires endless re-evaluation, and it is a difficult task. But on a very basic level, balance matters.
If you do not accept that, you are missing a core part of game design. The problem is that "balance" means different things to different people. Some players want every class to do the exact same damage. Others want a rock-paper-scissors system where everyone has a counter. Neither of these extremes is truly healthy for a long-running MMO.
The real goal is not to make everyone equal. It is to make sure that player skill and choice matter more than the class you picked at character creation. When a single build dominates every raid and PvP match, the game becomes boring. When a class is so weak that it is locked out of group content, the game becomes frustrating.
Developers have to walk a tightrope. They need to buff the weak without making them overpowered. They need to nerf the strong without making players feel like their time was wasted. It is a thankless job. But it is also necessary. Without balance, the game stops being about playing and starts being about chasing the meta. And that is not a game at all.
