A landmark £5 billion collective legal action against Sony Interactive Entertainment commenced in London this Tuesday. The case, representing nearly nine million British PlayStation customers, accuses the gaming giant of abusing its dominant market position to impose unfair pricing terms.
The lawsuit, certified by the Competition Appeal Tribunal, alleges that Sony required all digital game and add-on content purchases to be made through its own official PlayStation Store. This mandatory channel, the claim argues, allowed Sony to enforce a 30% commission on all sales. Consumers ultimately bore this cost through significantly higher prices for digital games and downloadable content compared to physical copies and other platforms.
The legal claim contends this practice constitutes an abuse of Sony’s market power, violating UK competition law. It asserts that customers were unlawfully overcharged for their digital purchases over a six-year period. Sony has previously stated its intention to defend against the allegations vigorously. The trial's outcome could set a major precedent for digital marketplace operations and consumer rights within the gaming industry and beyond.
