In a recent interview, the lead designer of the acclaimed 2025 puzzle game Blue Prince, Tonda Ros, opened up about the highs and lows of the game's intricate design. When asked to name the best puzzle in the mansion-exploration title, Ros pointed to one involving 44 letters. "I really have never seen [that] in any other game, so, to me, that kind of stands out," he said, noting his pride in creating something truly unique for players.
Conversely, Ros identified a specific "parlor room" puzzle as a contender for the game's worst. These recurring puzzles present players with three boxes—Blue, White, and Black—each with a statement, where one box contains gems, one statement is true, and one is false. The problematic puzzle, Ros explained, suffers from "clumsy complexity and logical ambiguity."
The clues for this puzzle are: Blue states "One of the other statements is false"; White says "One of the other boxes contains gems"; and Black claims "If you replace the word ONE in the other two statements with BOTH they will both be false." Ros admitted this puzzle has an unintentionally ambiguous solution, a flaw that slipped through years of testing. He expressed a desire to reword it in a future update, contrasting it with the elegant design of his favorite brain-teasers.
Despite this single misstep, Blue Prince remains densely packed with clever and satisfying puzzles that have captivated players for dozens of hours, solidifying its reputation as a standout in the genre.
