Sony’s ‘Destiny 2’ Obliteration Has Almost No Precedent In The Industry

Sony’s ‘Destiny 2’ Obliteration Has Almost No Precedent In The Industry

Destiny 2 is not just ending, its support is being liquidated. What Sony is doing here is almost entirely unprecedented in the industry. The decision to effectively obliterate large portions of the game's content, including entire expansions and seasonal storylines, goes far beyond the typical sunsetting seen in other live-service titles. Most games that reach the end of their planned lifecycle either shut down servers entirely or leave the existing content playable in a static state. Sony and Bungie, however, are choosing to surgically remove paid expansions and major narrative arcs from the game, rendering them permanently inaccessible.

This is not a simple server closure. It is an active deletion of content that players purchased and invested hundreds of hours into. Other major franchises, such as Final Fantasy XIV or World of Warcraft, have retired old expansions, but they typically fold them into the base game or allow players to still access the zones and quests. Even when content is removed, it is often replaced with a streamlined version. Destiny 2's approach is more aggressive: entire planets, raids, and story campaigns are being cut out, with no legacy option or offline mode offered.

The move sets a dangerous precedent for digital ownership. If a major publisher can remove purchased content from a live game without refunds or compensation, it raises questions about what players actually own. Sony's strategy suggests that the value of a game is entirely temporary, tied to the whims of the developer's roadmap. For an industry already struggling with preservation and consumer trust, this obliteration feels less like a natural end and more like a deliberate liquidation of a product that players thought they owned.
