The Paley Center for Media in New York City has launched a limited-time exhibition honoring 45 years of Pac-Man, the iconic yellow arcade character that changed video game history. The exhibit, now open to the public, traces the journey of the maze-chomping hero from its 1980 debut to its lasting influence on pop culture and digital entertainment.
Visitors can explore original arcade cabinets, rare promotional materials, and design documents that show how a simple circle with a missing wedge became a global phenomenon. The display includes early concept sketches, vintage merchandise, and interactive stations where guests can play classic Pac-Man and its sequels. The exhibit also highlights the game's role in breaking gender barriers in gaming, as Pac-Man was one of the first titles to attract female players in arcades.
Pac-Man was created by Toru Iwatani for Namco and released in Japan in May 1980, arriving in the United States later that year. It quickly became a cultural touchstone, spawning cartoons, music, and endless imitations. The Paley exhibit runs through early 2025, offering a nostalgic trip for longtime fans and a history lesson for younger players who know Pac-Man only through smartphones and modern consoles. The museum is located at 25 West 52nd Street in Manhattan.
