A major overhaul of the Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) age rating system will introduce stricter guidelines for games featuring loot boxes and blockchain technology. The changes, set to be enforced across Europe, mandate a minimum age rating of 16 for any game containing paid random-item loot boxes.
This significant policy shift aims to address longstanding concerns about the potential harms of gambling-like mechanics in video games, particularly for younger audiences. The decision reflects extensive consultation with regulatory bodies and experts who have highlighted the risks these systems can pose.
Furthermore, the new PEGI criteria will take an even firmer stance on emerging technologies. Starting in July 2026, any video game incorporating monetizable NFTs or blockchain-based mechanisms will automatically receive a PEGI 18 rating. This move places such content in the highest age category, citing concerns over financial risks and speculative value associated with these digital assets.
The updated ratings are designed to provide clearer guidance to parents and guardians, helping them make more informed decisions about the games their children play. The video game industry will now need to adapt its labeling and marketing to comply with these new, continent-wide standards for digital content.
