Meet Wolfjaw, a quietly important video game company

A public relations pitch for Mitch Patterson, founder of Wolfjaw Studios, suggests he runs what might be "the most important studio you have never heard about." That claim holds up when you look at his client list. During a recent meeting, Patterson rattled off names like Sony PlayStation, Bungie, Riot, Wizards of the Coast, Innersloth, and Take Two Interactive. Krafton has recently joined that roster.

Wolfjaw, based in Troy, New York, does not actually make video games. Instead, the company builds the infrastructure that powers online games. They handle account systems, in-game shops, inventory management for cross-platform titles, and keep voice chat working when players jump between servers mid-match. It is unglamorous backend work that most studios would rather avoid.

"The problem is no one at those studios actually wants to do this," Patterson said at the DICE conference in Las Vegas earlier this year. That reluctance creates an opportunity for Wolfjaw, which has specialized in this kind of work for about a decade.

"We are the backend team for Destiny 2," Patterson said, referring to Bungie's multiplayer shooter. "We are the backend for Marathon," he added, name-checking Bungie's upcoming title. The work extends beyond Bungie. "If there is a piece of backend software for Among Us, we have done it," Patterson said, citing Innersloth's massive hit.

Wolfjaw also worked on Transformers: Reactivate, Tencent's multiplayer game that was in development at Splash Damage before it was cancelled early last year. Patterson played it and described it as similar to Destiny but with Transformers. He also confirmed that Wolfjaw worked on games for Take Two, with NBA 2K listed on the company's website. When asked if that meant work across multiple Take Two studios, Patterson replied, "Probably yes."
