Jason Momoa has exited the upcoming film adaptation of the popular video game "Helldivers," which was set to be directed by Justin Lin. The project, which had been in active development at Sony Pictures, is now searching for a new lead actor to take over the role. Sources close to the production say Momoa's departure was amicable and stemmed from scheduling conflicts with other commitments, not creative differences.
The "Helldivers" movie was first announced in 2022, with Lin attached to direct after his work on the "Fast & Furious" franchise. The game, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, is a satirical military sci-fi shooter where players fight for "Super Earth" against alien threats. The film adaptation was expected to capture the game's over-the-top action and dark humor.
With Momoa out, the studio is moving quickly to find a replacement. No other actors have been formally approached yet, but insiders say the search is focused on someone who can bring both physical presence and comedic timing to the role. Production was originally slated to begin later this year, though that timeline may shift depending on how fast a new star is locked in. Lin remains attached to direct and produce.
