I used to think having a baby meant saying goodbye to my gaming hobby. Late-night feedings would replace late-night raids. Dirty diapers would replace high-score chases. I pictured my copy of Dead as Disco gathering dust, my Virtual Fighter 5 skills fading into memory. I was wrong.
What I discovered is that gaming became a necessary escape, not a guilty pleasure. After a day of burping, rocking, and pacing the floor with a crying infant, I needed something that was just for me. Those thirty minutes with a controller in my hands felt like a lifeline. They were a reset button for my brain.
But the way I play has changed. I no longer have the patience for long, drawn-out campaigns or complex online matches that demand two-hour blocks of time. I gravitate toward games I can pause instantly. I play in short bursts. I save my progress constantly. The competitive drive to be the best is gone. Now I just want to unwind.
Fatherhood redefined my passion. It did not kill it. The late-night raids are rarer, but they mean more when they happen. My hobby is no longer a priority that competes with my life. It is a necessary break within it. And that makes every session feel earned.
