Bungie has officially ended major content development for Destiny 2, leaving many players to wonder if this means the long-rumored Destiny 3 is finally on the horizon. The answer, according to sources familiar with the studio's plans, is a firm no. At least not anytime soon.
The decision to sunset Destiny 2's live-service model comes after years of declining player engagement and internal restructuring at Bungie. The studio has shifted resources toward new projects, including the recently released Marathon and an unannounced extraction shooter. While some fans hoped the end of Destiny 2 would clear the path for a proper sequel, Bungie appears to have moved on from the franchise entirely for the foreseeable future.
This is not the first time rumors of Destiny 3 have surfaced. Speculation ran rampant after the Lightfall expansion and again during the Final Shape campaign. But each time, Bungie reaffirmed its commitment to Destiny 2 as a long-term platform. Now that support is truly ending, the silence on a successor speaks volumes.
For the dedicated player base, this is a bitter pill. Destiny 2 has been a live-service staple for nearly a decade, surviving controversies, content droughts, and a messy split from Activision. But the industry has changed. Bungie is now focused on new intellectual property and competitive multiplayer titles, leaving the Destiny universe in a state of limbo.
Unless Bungie has a surprise announcement planned for a future showcase, players should not expect a Destiny 3 announcement anytime soon. The franchise, for now, is effectively over.
