Atari Is Remastering Godzilla and Thief for PC and Consoles, and I Couldn't Be Happier

At Summer Game Fest, I got some hands-on time with two upcoming remasters from Atari: Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee and Thief: The Dark Project. And honestly, they look fantastic. These are not just quick ports with a resolution bump. Both games have been given a careful, modernized treatment that respects the originals while making them feel fresh.

Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee was a chaotic, arena-based brawler from the early 2000s where you could pick a classic kaiju and smash up a city. The remaster keeps that same wild energy. The textures are cleaner, the lighting is better, and the frame rate is smooth. But the core gameplay is still there -- the heavy, satisfying stomps, the beam attacks, and the destructible buildings. It plays exactly how I remember it, only now it does not look like a blurry mess on a modern screen.

Thief: The Dark Project is a different beast. This is the 1998 stealth classic that basically invented the first-person sneaking genre. The remaster is more than a visual overhaul. The controls have been reworked to feel natural on a gamepad, which was a big hurdle for the original. The sound design, which was always the star of the game, has been cleaned up without losing its eerie atmosphere. I crept through a few early levels, and the tension is still there. The shadows feel deep, the guards are alert, and the loot is tempting.

Both remasters are set for release on PC and consoles later this year. If you missed these games the first time around, this is the perfect chance to see what made them special. If you played them back in the day, you will feel right at home. Atari is doing this right.
